Shrink tubbing
You will need shrink tube or something to cover the individual wire joints. I also covered the finished
joint with shrink tube. Electrical tape could be used but shrink tube works better. If you’re using
shrink tube, make sure you put the tube on before soldering your connections. I cut the wires shorter
for convenience and tinned the ends. I then soldered the wires according to the following table.
3.5mm Jack 3.5mm Plug Black White White Black 2.5mm Jack 3.5mm Plug Black Green Red Red
I put a large piece of tubing on the 3.5mm plug wire before starting and put heat shrink tube on each
of the wires and shrunk down as I went and. I cut off the unneeded wires and pulled the larger shrink
tube over the finished connections and shrunk it in place. Note: yup my tub does not cover the whole
joint. I only had some short pieces☹.
My original idea was to cut the connector off the headset and connect the wires directly to the wire
on the 3.5mm plug, but the headset wires have fine copper wires intertwined with nylon thread and I
was unsuccessful in separating the two. The plugs and jack come in packs of 2 or 4. The biggest
expense was the headsets. I could only find them in a 5 pack for $40. Breaking it down the cost was
about $20 including the headset.
